Student Work (Thesis)
Inspired by my experience as a mother of a transgender teen, INHALE / EXHALE is an informational and emotionally supportive initiative designed for parents of teenagers who have just come out as transgender. It offers guidance, clarity, and reassurance, helping families navigate the initial shock, questions, and uncertainties that often arise in those first moments. The goal is to provide parents with the knowledge and confidence they need to move forward with care and understanding.
The project consists of three interconnected components:
Conversation Cards – starting the dialogue:
This set includes twenty cards, ten designed for parents and ten for teens, each featuring thoughtful, guiding questions. The cards are intended to open up honest, meaningful conversations, helping both parent and child express themselves more freely and build mutual understanding.
A Booklet – providing knowledge and support:
Created for parents, the booklet offers essential information for the beginning of this journey, alongside emotional guidance. It serves as a steady, reassuring resource during a time that can feel overwhelming and uncertain.
Posters – raising awareness:
The posters act as a visual extension of the project, designed to increase awareness and reach. Displayed in professional caregivers’ offices and supportive environments, they help connect more families to the resource.
My design process began with developing the brand’s visual language. The core visual elements were carefully selected, combining authentic photography of transgender youth with floral imagery symbolizing growth and the journey of becoming one’s true self.
Building on this foundation, I moved on to defining the brand name, followed by the selection of typography and a colour palette that reflect the brand’s values - compassionate, empathetic, emotional, and support-driven.
With these elements established, I designed the layout of the booklet to visually communicate the brand’s tone and narrative, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and emotional resonance throughout.
The next stage focused on the posters design, maintaining the established visual language while introducing subtle variations to capture attention and create visual impact in public spaces.
Finally, I designed the card set, applying the brand’s visual identity in a clean and minimal way that allows the questions themselves to remain the central focus.
