“Icon” is Israel’s largest annual convention celebrating the Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Role-Playing, and Anime fandoms. Each year, the event’s organizing team chooses a new theme, which serves as the foundation for that year’s branding and visual identity. The theme for the 2017 convention was “Cultures.”

I began by exploring the meaning of “cultures” and how it connects to the diverse audience of the convention. This exploration led me to draw parallels between the idea of cultures and the many fandom communities that come together at the event.

My goal was to create a visual identity that celebrated this diversity by featuring characters that serve as cultural icons within each fandom. I wanted every attendee to feel a personal connection to the design. To see their own world reflected in the visuals.

To bring this concept to life, I developed an inclusive colour palette that represented the wide range of communities present at the convention. From there, I designed a series of figures embodying the different fandoms, forming the foundation of the convention’s visual branding.
